Good morning! Black Day Gone, White Day Come.White day is a Valentine's Day in Japan. They call as ホワイトデー Howaito Dē.
Mostly, girls or women gave chocolate gifts to their observed boys or men on Western Valentine's Day (24th February). And then, observed boys or men would return gift to the girl or woman for reply or express their love on one month later. So, White Day is an "answer Day' to Valentine's Day.
In Hong Kong, younger or some people who love Japan culture would also celebrate White Day. They would not only buy some chocolate to their lover, and also give some to their friends or family. This behavior means thank you for your teaching or caring.
However, the original celebration of White Day is not related to Valentine. And, it is full of commercial. In 1977, a Fukuoka-based confectionery company, Ishimramansedio (石村萬盛堂), marketed marshmallows to people on March 14, calling it Marshmallow Day. Then, the National Confectionery Industry Association, in 1978, started March 14 as an "answer day" to Valentine's Day. As the marshmallow is made by white sugar, it also calls as White Day.
Soon, confectionery companies found that there is a good market promotion on White Day. So, they began marketing white chocolate. Nowadays, there is not only men give chocolate, and also give jewelry or other gifts. Moreover, everyone (no matter you are a boy or girl) also can give a gifts to thank you people who is around you and supporting you in this year.
No matter White Day is a commercial promotion or not. It also let us have a good "reason" to express our love to others, if you are shy.
